Sync'Em Version History

The latest released version is Sync'Em 1.40 (released 2009-08-28)

The download page may also have a recent beta version
(how to determine your Sync'Em version).

2009-08-29: Sync'Em 1.41 (1.41 2009.08.28.1) released.

Changes from version 1.40:

  • fixes a problem where having more than one attendee in an iCal meeting and then using iCal to send the update could fail
  • changes the handling of an Internal Server Error (HTTPS 500) failure response to a Google connection into a warning message rather than a critical message — this will prevent the Sync'Em Message Viewer from being opened ('though you could also do that via a Preferences setting)

(while one would normally consider this a critical and likely permanent error, it is Google so it's unlikely to be a long-lived situation — and, indeed, such errors are intermittent so one connection/sync attempt will fail but the next few will succeed)

  • fixes an issue where Google connections will sometimes be redirected temporarily (HTTPS 307 response)

2009-08-26: Sync'Em 1.40 (1.40 2009.08.26.1) released.

Changes from version 1.34:

  • adds support for Google recurring/detached calendar events
  • adds support for OS X 10.6 (assuming the retail/released version doesn't have any last-minute changes from the most recent developer beta)
  • fixes a problem where an incorrect status could be shown via the Sync'Em menu extra
  • fixes a problem where a bogus "failed persistence verification" message could be presented immediately after installation
  • fixes a problem where an incorrect information source name could be shown in the conflict-resolution window
  • works around the Google limitation where empty contacts are not allowed
  • works around an Exchange's inability to change the attendees on the detached event during the create

2009-08-08: Sync'Em 1.34 (1.34 2009.08.07.1) released.

Changes from version 1.33:

  • adds support for Gmail's new structured names and addresses
  • fixes a problem that could occur with the meeting organizer sync'd to Google or Exchange calendar events
  • fixes a problem that could cause certain Exchange recurring events to lose the recurrence attibutes
  • fixes a problem that could occur when setting up multiple information sources based upon the same account
  • fixes a problem where messaging preference settings were not being obeyed
  • fixes a problem where syncing would be attempted for a partially setup iCal calendar information source
  • fixes some cosmetic issues when displaying certain Preferences information
  • improves some messages about events

2009-08-03: Sync'Em 1.33 (1.33 2009.07.31.1) released.

Changes from version 1.32:

  • adds support for basic Google calendar events
    • recurring/detached event support is next (they're currently ignored)
    • full meeting integration after recurring/detached event support
  • adds support for new Google contact fields (nickname, relations/Related names/Persons, URLs/websites, Birthday Dates)
  • improves the default handling of Exchange's FileAs/FileAsMapping fields when syncing
  • fixes an obscure syncing issue with Exchange FileAs/FileAsMapping
  • adds some minor user interface improvements

2009-07-15: Sync'Em 1.32 (1.32 2009.07.15.2) released.

Changes from version 1.31:

  • adds a Meeting Agent to check Exchange for meeting invites and responses and respond directly via Exchange — this is very important if you work within an Exchange-based environment
    • with this addition, it's now possible to use iCal and be fully compliant with the Exchange-based workflow — Exchange-based invites and responses will be handled directly via Exchange so all the normal Exchange-based features will work on the Exchange server (i.e., the attendee tracking, Free/Busy calendar, etc. will all be updated on the Exchange server)
  • adds a "Mark Messages as Reviewed" entry to the Sync'Em menu extra
  • fixes two obscure issues that could prevent a changed item from being sync'd
  • fixes a problem where the Sync'Em Engine could become unable to be started without a manual repair effort
  • works around an iCal bug where recurring events can have a bogus recurrence range
  • works around a problem where Google would treat a space-filled field (allowed by Address Book) as an empty field and reject the item
  • works around a bogus iCal behavior for declined invites
  • now handles the (serious User-created) error where localhost is no long mapped to 127.0.0.1
  • enhances the meaning and/or advice sections for certain error messages
  • ensures there's a blank line preceeding a [SyncEm Data] entry

2009-06-20: Sync'Em 1.31 (1.31 2009.06.18.1) released.

Changes from version 1.30:

  • fixes the following issue: For a meeting event that originated in Exchange, when changing the reply status for that meeting in iCal, Sync'Em will not send a response for that meeting if that's a meeting for which you (i.e., the iCal user) were not the organizer (i.e., you are only an attendee). This meant that the organizer didn't receive a response from you, 'though the Exchange calendar, including Exchange's free/busy calendar, was properly updated.

2009-06-11: Sync'Em 1.30 (1.30 2009.06.11.1) released.

Changes from version 1.28:

  • the Setup assistant has (finally!) been completed and now completely replaces the Advanced Setup user interface with a much easier interface
  • added ability to detect and relaunch the Sync'Em Engine if it dies
  • added some integrity checks for, and handling of, corrupted SQLite DB files
  • works around a problem where Exchange won't accept some of the alarm conditions handled by iCal
  • added the ability to recover from a lost Exchange EWS ID
  • added ability to handle a contact note that's too large for Google to accept

2009-04-18: Sync'Em 1.28 (1.28 2009.04.17.1) released.

Note: due to an underlying change in 1.28, the first sync with 1.28 will re-sync all iCal events to Exchange.

Changes from version 1.27:

  • adds the ability to send, from iCal, invite/update/cancellation events via Exchange so all the normal Exchange-based features will work on the Exchange server (e.g., Free/Busy calendar, attendee tracking, etc. will all be updated on the Exchange server). If you're an iCal user within an Exchange-based organization, this is important.
  • improves performance when syncing large numbers of items
  • adds some User interface improvements (e.g., shows next sync time)
  • fixes a problem where contacts from a BlackBerry were not sync'd (Blackberry sync doesn't set the email address display as value which Sync'Em was using to know how many email addresses there are)
  • fixes a problem where some Birthday events were not comparing properly and were showing up as a conflict (not to be confused with the ol' personal conflict of getting older!)
  • fixes a bug that could crash the Sync'Em Engine if a nonexistent Exchange Locale name started with a slash
  • adds detection/workaround for case where OS X's Sync Services erroneously appears to have no changes/content

2009-03-27: Sync'Em 1.27 (1.27 2009.03.26.1) released.

Changes from version 1.26:

  • adds a change to help prevent a locked DB issue
  • adds improvements to deal with items in Exchange when Exchange reports it's own item is corrupted
  • now warns if the Sync'Em Engine fails to launch (usually due to unsupported Input Managers)

2009-03-20: Sync'Em 1.26 (1.26 2009.03.19.1) released.

Changes from version 1.25:

  • multiple user interface improvements
  • updated ReadMe document (fixed multiple out-of-date items)
  • fixes some sync problems related to a [SyncEm Data] parsing issue
  • fixes an obscure sync problem when syncing an Exchange category setting
  • works around an Exchange server issue with erroneous UIDs
  • detects and reports OS X's inability to launch a subprocess (usually signifies a conflict with unsupported Input Managers)
  • detects and reports incompatible Java configuration

2009-03-08: Sync'Em 1.25 (1.25 2009.03.06.1) released.

Changes from version 1.24:

  • adds support for Exchange autodiscovery — making it much easier to set up Exchange access in organizations were autodiscovery is configured for their Exchange server
  • improved performance when syncing with Exchange and Google servers — especially for the initial sync
  • installer now installs the menu extra and checks for and updates out-of-date supporting software (MenuCracker)
  • multiple user interface improvements
  • fixed a memory leak (about 1 MB every sync)
  • works around a problem where the Exchange server supplies an null timezone entry

2009-02-20: Sync'Em 1.24 (1.24 2009.02.20.1) released.

  • changes the format of some "[SyncEm Data]" entries to make them easier to use

  • fixes a small per-sync memory leak that likely arrived with version 1.23
  • adds some error-handling and message improvements
  • adds some minor user interface improvements

  • adds some minor user interface improvements
  • fixes a syncing problem where an Exchange-reported error was not handled correctly
  • fixes a syncing problem by ignoring a bogus intermittent error from OS X's Sync Services
  • fixes a loss of syncing problem by working around OS X's Sync Services' inability to reliably support multi-process access
  • fixes a loss of syncing problem, mostly on OS X 10.4, where a network connetion wasn't being released properly

2009-01-10: Sync'Em 1.20 (1.20 2009.01.09.1) released.

Changes from version 1.18:

  • integrates the Exchange-server login troubleshooting diagnostics along with "almost automatic" support ticket creation (you're always in control of anything that's sent to us)
  • adds full license-status reporting in the Sync'Em "About" preferences tab
  • improves the status display in the Sync'Em menu extra for certain Sync'Em Engine cases
  • fixes a long-standing issue with an underlying database getting "wedged" & hanging things up (this issue was "covered up" by a problem that was fixed in 1.18)
  • fixes an issue that could cause the menu extra/SystemUIServer to crash
  • fixes an issue where the installer would "wait forever" if OS X's launchd didn't stop a Sync'Em Engine process

2008-12-18: Sync'Em 1.18 (1.18 2008.12.18.2) released.

Version 1.18 is the result of an intense effort that addresses all reported issues, some of which was accomplished only via significant and much appreciated community participation.

Changes from version 1.17:

  • adds a manual "Sync All Setups" capability
  • adds multiple small but important user interface enhancements and clarifications
  • adds handling for duplicate IDs created via copies at sync source, system failures and/or erroneous syncs — not necessarily by Sync'Em (caused sync failures)
  • fixes a "spin forever doing nothing" problem as a result of certain network issues (caused sync failures)
