These example setups illustrate and further explain just a few of the setups possible with Sync'Em.

Note: not all the Sync'Em capabilities are currently available — see our Product Roadmap for details.

Example 1: Sync Your Mac's Contacts With Google
(or Exchange or Another Mac)

Objective:
  • Sync one contacts group across Google and your Mac's Address Book
    • ... or across one contacts folder in Exchange, instead of Google
    • ... or across one contacts group in another Mac's Address Book, instead of Google
Results:
  • With all information sources set for bidirectional syncing:

      • ... or one contacts folder in Exchange, instead of the Google contacts group
      • ... or one contacts group in another Mac's Address Book group, instead of the Google contacts group
This configuration requires Sync'Em Contacts for the Mac (and Sync'Em Mac2Mac for the other Mac, if syncing to the other Mac's Address Book, instead of Google).
Licensing on iMac:
  • Sync Setups for Contacts
    • 1 for the Google contacts group
      • ... or 1 for the Exchange contacts folder

    • Total: 2 Contacts sync setups
Licensing on MacBook Pro (if syncing to the other Mac's Address Book, instead of Google):
  • No syncing is run by this Mac
  • Uses free Sync'Em Mac2Mac license
    • allows other Macs (e.g., the iMac) to sync this Mac's resources

Example 2: Sync Your Mac's Contacts and Events With Exchange (or Google)

Objective:
  • Sync one contacts folder/group across Exchange and your Mac's Address Book
    • ... or across one contacts group in Google, instead of Exchange
  • Sync one calendar's events across Exchange and your Mac's iCal
    • ... or across one calendar's events in Google, instead of Exchange
Results:
  • With all information sources set for bidirectional syncing:
    • one of your Mac's Address Book groups and one Google contacts group contain synchronized content
      • ... or one contacts folder in Exchange, instead of the Google contacts group
    • one of your Mac's iCal calendars and one Google calendar contain synchronized events content

  • Sync one calendar's events across your Macs' and another Macs' iCal calendars
Results:

    • 1 for this Mac's Address Book
    • 1 for other Mac's Sync'd Contacts

    • Total: 2 Events sync setups
Licensing on MacBook Pro:
  • No syncing is run by this Mac
  • Uses free Sync'Em Mac2Mac license
    • allows other Macs (e.g., the iMac) to sync this Mac's resources

Example 4: Sync Exchange, Google and 2 Macs

Where 1 Mac Drives All the Syncing

Objective:
  • Sync one contacts group/folder across Exchange, Google, your Mac's Address Book and another Mac's Address Book
  • Sync one calendar's events across Exchange, Google, your Mac's iCal and another Mac's iCal

Licensing on MacBook Pro:
  • No syncing is run by this Mac
  • Uses free Sync'Em Mac2Mac license
    • allows other Macs (e.g., the iMac) to sync this Mac's resources

Example 5: Sync Exchange, Google and 2 Macs

Where Each Mac Drives a Part of the Syncing

Objective:
  • On one Mac:
    • Sync one contacts group across Google, your Mac's Address Book and another Mac's Address Book
    • Sync one calendar's events across Google, your Mac's iCal and another Mac's iCal
  • On another Mac:
    • Sync one contacts group/folder across Exchange and your Mac's Address Book
    • Sync one calendar's events across Exchange and your Mac's iCal
Results:
  • With all information sources set for bidirectional syncing:
    • one of the Exchange contacts folders, one of the Google contacts groups, one of your Mac's Address Book groups and one of the other Mac's Address Book groups contain synchronized content
    • one of the Exchange calendars, one of the Google calendars, one of your Mac's iCal calendars and one of the other Mac's iCal calendars contain synchronized content

  • Sync Setups for Contacts
    • 1 for the Exchange contacts folder
    • 1 for this Mac's Address Book group
    • Total: 2 Contacts sync setups
  • Sync Setups for Events
    • 1 for the Exchange calendar events
    • 1 for this Mac's iCal calendar events
    • Total: 2 Contacts sync setups
There are multiple reasons why one might choose this configuration over the configuration in Example 4:
  • it might be important to control the Exchange syncing from the MacBook Pro:
    • your laptop is your work system and you want the most timely updates on that system
    • your laptop is the only system allowed to access the Exchange server so it must drive those syncs
  • you only want to sync to your home iMac in the evenings when your laptop is likely to be on your home network
    • you've setup an information source Schedule so the iMac only attempts syncing to the MacBook Pro during evening hours
There are numerous other reasons you might want to configure systems to drive different aspects of syncs. With Sync'Em, you have extensive flexibility that enables you to meet varied requirements.
